What is the difference between the tourist snapshots and the creation of first hand references for new work?
How do you digest a physical environment to create work?

The concept of "heritage" as we know it was a 20th century invention. With its growing importance, and an exponentially growing percentage of new "protected" areas every year, cities are becoming wrapped in regulations and constraints that were never publicly discussed or agreed upon. "We are all tourists" and planning decisions are made according to such state of the art.

In the context of the summer school, we propose an act of liberation.

Jasper Maskelyne and the Magic Gang performed a series of tricks during the WWII that included creation of fake realities or camouflage of physical realities in order to confuse the enemy. For instance, they created a fake Port of Alexandria that was bombed by the Germans protecting the real one, or they hid a plane factory making it look like a suburban area.

“Ultra” is an augmentative affix to say beyond, over, and it’s used in expression like Ultramondano, Ultracotto, Ultrarepubblicano to enhance, to exagerate the adjective with which is combined. During the workshop we will explore what adding the affix “ultra” to “authentic” could mean, what could bring on the table.

In a society where trends, news, anything are augmented daily, we want to be at the forefront of the new “ultra-authentic” movement.

In genetics, the Chimæra is an organism that contains at least two different sets of DNA, most often originating from the fusion of as many different zygotes. The outstanding Cathedral of Syracuse isn't simply built on some substantial remnants of the Athenaion. It rather crossbreeds a Doric temple and a Baroque church, ultimately achieving the impossible status of a Chimæra, an explicit and utterly fascinating difficult whole.

Vernacular tourism is a holidays style that is designed based on local needs, availability of construction materials and reflecting local traditions. At least originally, vernacular tourism did not use architects or designers but relied on the design skills and tradition of local builders.

It tends to evolve over time to reflect the environmental, cultural, technological, economic, and historical context in which it exists.

Sicily has a history of great earthquakes. Namely in 1693 a devastating earthquake destroyed over 70 towns in total. The reconstruction plans of these town were of three types: move the town to a new site, rebuild at the same site with a completely new town plan or rebuild using the existing town plan. Examples of towns that fell in the first category were Avola and Noto, their former locations now being known as Avola Antica and Noto Antica. Catania is an example of a city that was rebuilt on the same site to a new plan, while adapting some of the existing structures.
