Mosaics: Back to the future

Starting 6000 years ago in Mesopotamia, mosaics have survived various eras without ever going out of fashion. It is a fascinating technique that continues to be reinvented as technologies and materials are being renewed. Mosaics can be figurative or abstract, decorative or utilitarian, autonomous or related to architecture. What can make mosaics truly contemporary today?

In this workshop, the students will create a new design, either actually built or rendered as an image. We will visit local manufacturers who produce mosaics that combine both craftsmanship and the latest technologies.
