Mosaics: Back to the future

Edition: 2025
Workshop: Mosaics: Back to the future

Mosaics have existed for over 6,000 years, from Mesopotamia to the Mediterranean, constantly reinventing themselves without ever going out of style. They are figurative or abstract, decorative or functional, architectural or autonomous—always in between two and three dimensions.

In this workshop, students explored the mosaic as both heritage and contemporary practice, rooted in the Sicilian landscape. Through visits to local manufacturers and hands-on exercises, participants questioned what can make mosaics truly contemporary today.

Thanks to the collaboration with Nerosicilia, the workshop bridged craftsmanship and innovation, showcasing how Etna lava stone, recycled materials, and eco-sustainable techniques can shape new narratives for design.

Far from being a nostalgic return to tradition, this exploration revealed mosaics as a living medium: one that continues to transform, surprise, and inspire.

This workshop was made possible thanks to the support of the Digital Education Hubs (DEH) project, funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU
